Don't be a victim of auto theft
Every 22 seconds, an automobile is stolen in the U.S.
One out of every 44 cars is stolen or broken into each year. You can
reduce your chances of being a victim of auto theft by following a few
simple steps.
-
Lock your car. It might not keep out a determined
thief, but it is a less attractive target when locked.
-
Never leave your keys in your car. That's like putting
up a sign stating, "Steal me."
-
Never leave your car running while you dash into a
store or run a quick errand.
-
Take a look at where you are parking and always try
to park in a well-lighted area. Thieves like to work in the dark and
usually avoid areas where they can be seen.
-
Lock all packages and valuables in the trunk, or place
them out of sight. Avoid tempting someone into a theft.
-
Prevent unlawful towing. Use your emergency brake
and turn your front wheels sharply to the right or left. This makes
it difficult for a professional thief to tow your car away.
-
Automatic alarms and anti-theft devices are available
to prevent theft.
-
Keep a lookout for a deal that's "too good to
be true" -- it usually is. You could end up losing both the car
and the money you paid for it.
